SC directs filling up Information Commissioners posts within 6 months


New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Friday directed the states to fill up vacant posts of Information Commissioners (IC) within six months and said that for good governance, transparency is important. A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justices AK Sikri and Abdul Nazeer, passed the order after hearing a PIL filed by Anjali Bharadwaj on appointing the ICs expeditiously. The Court also said that particulars of all applicants, selection process for the posts of ICs must be placed in public domain and the search committee must have a shortlisting criteria which should be shared. The Top Court also said that ICs must be appointed from other fields and not just from bureaucracy and the process of recruitment should be done 1-2 months before the date of retirement. The Court passed the order after hearing in detail the arguments and submissions put forth by the petitioner, Anjali Bhardwaj and respondents.
