Sensex ends firm on 4th day at 36,725.42 pts on gains in index


Mumbai, Extending gains for the fourth consecutive session on Thursday, the BSE Sensex advanced by 89.32 points to end firm at 36,725.42 on strength of gains in index pivotals like L&T, Axis Bank, M&M and SBI. The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) went up a tad by 5.20 points to 11,058.20. Though the Sensex increased by 108 points to 36,744.02 in early trade, it pared early gains and hit day's low at 36,830.25 due to heavy selling in Oil & Gas, Technology, Metal and Health Care. It then recouped some of the losses before closing positive at 36,725.42, up by 89.32 points versus its previous close. It hit day's high at 36,830.25 during the day, up by 194 points. The Nifty registered day's high and low at 11,089.05 and 11,027.10 points, respectively. The gains in sectoral indices like FMCG, Industrials and Capital Goods pushed the equity market for the fourth day today, along with scrips of L&T, Axis Bank, M&M and ITC. The broader markets underperformed the Sensex, as the BSE Mid-Cap index and Small-Cap fell 0.34 per cent and 0.11 pc, respectively. The market breadth was negative on BSE, as 1,305 shares gained compared to 1,353 others fell and 161 were unchanged. Overseas, shares in Europe were trading lower while in Asia ended mixed, as investors await for further details on a possible trade agreement between China and the US. US stocks slid for the third consecutive session on Wednesday, as investors continue to wait for news of a trade deal between the world's two biggest economies.
