Sexual harassment scandal: Plea in HC to ask Delhi Police file charge sheet against JNU prof

New Delhi, Justice JR Midha of the Delhi High Court on Friday, after hearing, issued notice to Police on a petition seeking direction to file a charge sheet against Jawaharlal Nehru University Professor Atul Johri, who is accused of sexual harassment of his students. Eight JNU students had alleged in separate and independent complaints filed in March, 2018, grave and persistent sexual harassment and other offences allegedly committed by Prof Johri. Complainants have contended that Delhi Police, after submitting the status report, had failed to provide any justification for non-filing of charge sheet in spite of a lapse of more than a year since the registration of the First Information Report and statements of the complainants under Section 164 CrPC which were recorded during March last year. Plaintiffs submitted that the delay would enable witnesses to be won over and evidence to be tampered with. The students contended that even after a year failure to file a charge sheet sent out a message that police were shielding the accused from legal consequences. On March 20, Prof Johri was granted bail after his arrest by Delhi Police. Justice Midha today issued notice to Delhi Police seeking its response and set October 31 for the next hearing.
