Strangely despite being Basmati Rice the Madhya Pradesh produced basmati rice in denied GI Tag of it being Basmati by the GI Registry on the basis of date provided by the APEDA. Consequently unless the state produced Basmati is given the GI Tag it cannot be called Basmati.
The Chief Minister Mr.Shivraj Singh Chouhan is trying his best to secure GI Tag for state Basmati rice. He is still lobbying for it at Delhi. He met the Union Commerce Minister Mr.Suresh Prabhu, Union Home Minister Mr.Rajnath Singh and Member Lok Sabha from Vidisha and Foreign Minister Mrs.Sushma Swaraj.
He pointed out that Basmati rice is being produced in 13 district of the Madhya Pradesh since last 105 years. About 80 thousand farmers are connected to basmati farming.
It’s export amount to 3,000 crores rupees and recognized at all the standard. With no GI Tag the state basmati will not get fair market price.
The claim of Madhya Pradesh for GI Tag is also very sound on agro climatic conditions in the areas of its cultivations.
