Hanumanganj police have seized unaccounted Rs 16 lakh from a businessman. It is believed that this money is of hawala business. The income tax (I-T) Department is also investigating into the case.
Hanumanganj police received information late on Wednesday night that a man was standing near Hotel Sia Palace at Alpana Talkies turn and that he had lakhs of rupees.
The police nabbed the suspect at about 2.30 am. Police recovered Rs 16 lakh 29 thousand 400 from him. The businessman has been identified as Mahesh Wadhwani, 49, resident of Indore. According to police sources, the man sells singdana and chana in Indore.
The man told police that he supplied these items to traders in Bhopal and was going to Indore after making collection here. Police learnt that he had collected the amount from the traders in Bhopal. However he could not produce papers for the supply of items. He also could not tell from whom he had collected the amount in Bhopal.
Police believe the amount was being sent to Indore through hawala. Police have informed the Income Tax Department.
CSP Hanumanganj Gladwin Edward said that the person has been detained with money but at the moment it could not be ascertained that the money is circulated through Hawala channel. The police have registered a case under section 102 of the CrPC and have started further investigation.
If the cash was in possession of the man, he would have to prove in the court that from where did he got the cash, Edward added.
