In view of coming general elections to many state assemblies and soon after General Elections to the Lok Sabha the issue of voting pattern by way of EVM or by paper ballet be decided as early as possible.
The Election Commission is still of the opinion that the EVM are temper proof and there had been never any sort of manipulation in it in any election and its opinion it is not possible also.
When doubts were expressed on the performance of machine the Election Commission placed the EVM for political parties and other interesting persons to come and examine and prove, display or disclose any way in which the EVM can be manipulated to distort the voting.
Unfortunately most of the parties kept away from it without reason perhaps it do not have anything to prove its apprehension about the correct working of the EVM.
But now Government has to take a final decision whether to continue the use of EVM or the Election Commission be asked to revert to use of paper ballots. In the plenary session of the Congress the party urged the Commission to reintroduce the paper ballot system in the coming election.
Mr.Ram Madhav, General Secretary of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party said if there is consensus among all the political parties then in future elections can be held with the ballot papers. The Central Government should convene the all party meeting at the earliest.
In case reverting the paper ballot system the Election Commission will require sufficient time to make preparation to switch over to it.
Long Back for the first time the veteran BJP leader Mr.LK Advani in some other context suggested that India should give up EVM system and go back to paper ballot, as most of the developed countries who adopted the EVM have discarded it as unreliable and reverted to paper ballot.
Mr.Advani has not referred to any election of India and it was a general thought. But in 2014 when the BJP stormed into the power with a massive win particularly in Uttar Pradesh the Bahujan Samaj Party of Mayawati was a total rout as it could win a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Just to put up a brave face she said that BJP has not defeated her BSP but it was EVM manipulation that routed the party.
Almost everyone took it as a lame excuse and nobody took her seriously. Later in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha General Election the BJP defeated the ruling Samajwadi Party and come into power with massive mandate there also. The ousted Chief Minister Mr.Akhilesh Yadav also took up the same plea that his party defeat was due to EVM manipulations.
But recently the Samajwadi Party won Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bye elections defeating BJP with increased margin. Even after Modi Government at Centre the ‘Aap Party’ of Kejriwal won 67 out of 70 seats in the Delhi elections.
Now it has become a trend that who-so-ever will be defeated in the elections he or she will attribute the defeat to EVM. The issue of EVM and paper ballot has become a political gimmick.
