Wrestlers Bajrang and Vinesh proposed for Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna Award


New Delhi, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday recommended star wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat for country's highest sporting honour Rajeev Khel Ratna Award. Punia was also nominated for the highest sporting honour last year but the awards were given to Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Unhappy with the decision, gold medal winner of 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games threatened to approach the court but after his mentor Yogeshwar Dutt advice Punia decided to drop the case. In 2018, Punia won gold at the Asian Games (Jakarta) and Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast) in the 65 kg category. He also achieved the no 1 ranking in a first for India at the World level. He won the Arjuna award in the year 2015. He also awarded with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour this year. Apart from Punia, The Wrestling Federation of India has also recommended women's wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Phogat who won gold medal in Commonwealth and Asian Games and bronze medal in 53 kg category in the Asian championship last year. Phogat also bagged two gold medals in Commonwealth Games - 2014 Glasgow Games (48 kg category) and 2018 Gold Coast (50 kg category). She has one gold (2014 Incheon - 48 kg category) and one bronze (2018 Jakarta - 50 kg category) in Asian Games. She was awarded Arjuna Award in 2016. WFI also recommended wrestlers Rahul Aware, Harpreet Singh, Divya Kakran and Pooja Dhanda for Arjuna award while for Dronacharya Virender Kumar, Sujeet Maan, Narendra Kumar & Vikram Kumar.
