Lisbon/New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu, who arrived in Lisbon on a two-day state visit, was warmly welcomed by President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and accorded a Guard of Honour at the historic ‘Praca do Imperio’ in Lisbon.
The President’s House said in posts on X:
“President Droupadi Murmu was received by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal at the historic ‘Praca do Imperio’ in Lisbon. She was accorded a ceremonial welcome with the Guard of Honour.”
Later, President Murmu visited the Church of Santa Maria and laid a wreath at the tomb of Luis Vaz de Camoes – the national poet of Portugal. She also visited the Monastery of Jerónimos – a masterpiece of 16th-century architecture in Portugal.
The MEA spokesperson said in a post on X:
“President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn paid floral tributes at the tomb of Luis Vaz de Camoes, Portugal’s greatest poet.
“President also visited the Monastery of Jerónimos – a prominent monastery of 16th-century Gothic architecture in Portugal.”
President Murmu arrived in Lisbon on Sunday night on a two-day state visit, during which she will hold talks with the Portuguese leadership.
The presidential visit is taking place after a gap of 27 years, and comes as India and Portugal are celebrating 50 years of re-establishment of diplomatic relations
President Murmu’s visit to Portugal is on the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The last State Visit from India took place in 1998 when President K. R. Narayanan visited Portugal.
President Murmu will meet and hold delegation level talks with her counterpart, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. She will also meet the Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and the President of the National Assembly (Parliament), Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco.
India and Portugal share historic and friendly bilateral ties which have evolved over the years into a modern, multifaceted, and dynamic partnership, characterised by robust growth and expansion across several areas of cooperation. The visit will provide further impetus and renewed momentum to India’s growing relations with Portugal.
President Murmu will go on a state visit Slovakia from April 9-20.
