Railway track, and highway washed away by rain in Manipur

Imphal, July 30 (UNI) Heavy rains and a landslide washed away a portion of the Jiribam to Khongsangthe railway track and a major portion of Imphal-Jiribam highway on Tuesday.

A potentially catastrophic train accident was averted due to the swift actions of a Territorial Army battalion in the Noney district of Manipur.

A goods train, comprising of 21 wagons carrying rice was en route to Khongsang station in the Noney district when due to excessive rainfall washed away the crushed stone, that supports the tracks, between T-14 P2 and T-15 P1. The railway authorities were immediately informed. The incoming goods train was stopped at Kambiron by the Army personnel.

The timely intervention by the Territorial Army prevented what could have been a major train accident said the Spokesperson of PIB Defence Wing.

The Territorial Army is deployed along this stretch of the railway line to provide security for the under-construction mega railway project linking Jiribam to Imphal.

In another incident at Tamenglong district the Imphal Jiribam highway was cut off as landslide washed out about 200 m of the highway.
