Raipur, Feb 9 (UNI) Mumbai’s star batsman Prithvi Shaw announced his return from injury by hammering a record century before lunch against Chhattisgarh on Day 1 of the Elite Group B Ranji Trophy match here on Friday.
Shaw, who was out of action for the last five months due to a knee injury, did not take much time to find his form. He smashed 101 not out off 107 balls before he was dismissed for 159 in just 185 balls.
Shaw put up a sublime 244 runs partnership for the first wicket with Bhupen Lalwani who made 102 in 238 balls. This saw Mumbai end the day with a score of 310/4 despite Rahane losing his wicket after scoring one run.
The U19 World Cup-winning captain became the first Indian batsman in history to score two centuries before lunch.
Shaw achieved the same feat in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Assam at the Amingaon Ground in Guwahati. This came by during his 379 runs knock, which is still the record for the highest individual score by an Indian batsman post-independence.
Shaw has not played for the national team since 2021 when he last played against Sri Lanka in ODI and T20 series. His last Test match was against Australia in Adelaide where India was skittled for 36.
