Remembering Mallika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan on her death anniversary

Mumbai, Dec 23 (UNI) Famous as Mallika-e-Tarannum/ Queen of Melody, Noor Jehan left an indelible mark on Indian cinema not only with her enchanting voice but also acting prowess. With her magical voice and riveting screen presence, Noor Jehan became a symbol of grace, talent, and artistic excellence.

Born as Allah Wassi on September 21, 1926, in the quaint town of Kasur in Punjab, Noor Jehan’s arrival into the world was marked by a unique musical flair. Upon hearing the cries of the newborn, her aunt remarked that the child cries in rhythmic music.

Her parents, both stage performers, cultivated an environment where music and art were deeply revered. Recognising her innate talent, her mother arranged for her formal musical training under the guidance of Kajan Bai. Later, Noor Jehan honed her skills in classical music under maestros such as Ustad Ghulam Mohammad and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Her cinematic journey began in 1930 with the silent film “Hind Ke Taare”, produced under the banner of Indian Pictures. Soon after, her family relocated to Kolkata, where she acted in around 11 silent films. By 1931, Noor Jehan had already established herself as a talented child artist.

Her debut in talkies came with the 1932 film “Shashi Punnu”. A move to Kolkata proved transformative for Noor Jehan’s career, as she worked with Kohinoor United Artists and caught the eye of prominent producer Pancholi.

Pancholi recognised her potential and cast her in the musical drama “Gul-E-Bakavali” (1939). This film became a major success, with Noor Jehan’s first recorded song, “Salaa Jawaniyaan Maane Aur Pinjre De Vich,” capturing the public’s imagination.

Returning to Lahore after her stint in Kolkata, Noor Jehan collaborated with legendary composer G.A. Chishti, performing at stage shows and earning seven-and-a-half annas per song—a substantial amount at the time.

Her ascent continued with Pancholi’s blockbuster “Khandaan” (1942), which cemented her status as both a leading actress and a singer par excellence.
