New York, Feb 7 (UNI) Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool, has officially severed ties with Marvel after what he describes as a blatant snub at the “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiere.
According to Liefeld, Disney and Marvel Studios excluded him and his family from the official after-party, a decision which he believes was intentional.
Liefeld detailed his grievances on his Robservations podcast, alleging that his red-carpet photos were conspicuously omitted from official coverage. “It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat [me],” he said of his experience at the New York City premiere.
This latest incident is just one in a seies of disputes between Liefeld and Marvel. He has previously voiced his frustration over creator credit placement, financial arrangements and what he perceives as a lack of recognition from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.
However, a source familiar with the situation has pushed back on Liefeld’s claims, stating that he was invited to visit the film’s set in London and that Marvel supported a series of private “Deadline & Wolverine” screenings he hosted after the premiere. Disney and Marvel Studios have declined to comment.
Despite the creative rift, Liefeld retains financial interests in “Deadpool”, as he never accepted a buyout for his contributions. Liefeld claims his final collaboration with the publisher will be the Marvel comic book “Deadpool Team Up,” which releases on February 12.
“I am retiring from Deadpool. It’s official. Yup, after 33 years of not only introducing Deadpool but chronicling many of his most popular adventures it’s time for the Deadpool Daddy to say farewell,” he wrote on Instagram a year ago. “One of the fun parts about getting older is you can retire from things, so here I am.”
