Rohit to play Ranji match after nearly a decade

Mumbai, Jan 18 (UNI) India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir, set to take place from January 23-26 at the Wankhede Stadium here.

This will mark Rohit’s return to domestic cricket after nearly a decade, with his last Ranji appearance also at the same venue in November 2015 against Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement was made during the unveiling of the Champions Trophy squad in Mumbai on Saturday. When asked about his availability for domestic matches, Rohit responded, “Yes, I will play.”

Rohit has already joined the Mumbai team and was seen training with the squad. According to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), the final team for the Ranji game will be selected on January 20.

This move aligns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) directive encouraging players to participate in domestic tournaments when not engaged in international commitments. Other top players like Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have also confirmed their availability for their respective state teams.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja’s participation in Saurashtra’s next match against Delhi in Rajkot remains uncertain. A Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) official indicated that the all-rounder’s decision is expected on Sunday.

Similarly, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) awaits confirmation from KL Rahul regarding his availability for the game against Punjab in Bengaluru.

With players like Rohit Sharma and others committing to domestic cricket, the Ranji Trophy is set to gain significant attention this season.
