New Delhi, July 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday stayed orders by Uttar Pradesh and other state governments directing eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display names of owners and employees.
The bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice SVN Bhatti said that allowing enforcement of such directions will infringe upon the secular character of Republic of India.
The court also issued notices to three states, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand and Madhya Pradesh, seeking their response on the issue. The court fixed July 26 for the next hearing.
The court said the eateries may only display on their boards if they are serving vegetarian or non-vegetarian food and clarified that police cannot enforce the order for food stalls to display owners’ name.
