Sensex down over 400 points

Mumbai, Aug 8 (UNI) The BSE Sensex on Thursday tumbled down 498 points to 78,970 in early trade on profit booking by local operators.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) slipped 175.45 pts at 24,122.05 pts.

Jumping over 800 pts on Wednesday, the equity market opened in red.

The RBI maintained status quo in its key rates for the ninth straight time, citing rising food inflation, in its bi-monthly meeting.

The BSE registered intraday highs and lows at 79,422.15 and 78,955.43 pts, respectively.

The NSE registered days high and low at 24,263.50 and 24,119.30 pts, respectively.

The midcap fell 0.39 pc, while the small cap fell by 0.12 pc.

The losers were Infosys by 1.91 pc to Rs 1757.75, L& T by 1.82 pc to Rs 3578.75, JSW Steel by 1.63 pc to Rs 892.45 and Powergrid by 1.63 pc to Rs 346.35.

The gainers were Tata Motors by 1.34 pc to Rs 1039 and Tech Mahindra by 0.32 pc to Rs 1740.90.
