Mumbai, Mar 21 (UNI) Extending gains for the fifth consecutive session on Friday, the BSE Sensex rallied 557.45 pts to close at 76,905.51 following gains in oil and gas, utilities and energy stocks.
Fresh foreign fund inflow too supported the market.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 159.75 pts at 23,350.40.
Though volatility was seen during the day, it finally ended in green only.
Registering a massive gain of 899 on Thursday, the Sensex fell 119 pts at 76,155 in the opening session. During the day, it dropped 253 pts at 76,095.26, the day’s low.
In late trade, it erased earlier losses and registered a 693-pt gain at 77,041.94, day’s high, before closing at 76,905.51, up 557.45 pts from its previous close.
The Nifty registered a day’s high at 23,402.70 and a low at 23,132.80 pts.
The stocks that went up were oil and gas by 2.25 pc, followed by utilities by 2.11 pc, telecommunications by 1.91 pc and energy by 1.86 pc.
The mid cap rose by 1.14 and the small cap by 2.05 pc.
In 30 scrips, 25 advanced while 5 declined.
The gainers were NTPC by 3.09 pc to Rs 352.20, Bajaj Finance by 2.62 pc to Rs 8907.40, Kotak Bank by 2.14 pc to Rs 2078.90 and Axis Bank by 2.13 pc to Rs 1075.90.
The losers were M&M by 1.19 pc to Rs 2796, Tata Steel by 1.19 pc to Rs 157.10, and Titan by 0.78 pc to Rs 3167.95.
A mixed trend was seen in the Asian market, as the Kospi gained by 0.23 pc and the Set Composite by 0.41.
While the Straits Times declined by 0.10 pc, the Hang Seng by 2.24 pc and the Taiwan Weighted by 0.76 pc.
