Shami ruled out of remaining Border-Gavaskar Tests

Mumbai, Dec 23 (UNI) Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the remaining two Tests in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series due to minor swelling in his left knee.

The swelling, attributed to increased joint loading from his heavy bowling workload, has led the BCCI Medical Team to determine that Shami requires more time for controlled recovery, BCCI Honorary Joint Secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement on Monday.

While Shami has fully recovered from his earlier right heel surgery, which had sidelined him earlier, the increased demands of his bowling in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have contributed to the knee issue, he said.

Shami bowled 43 overs in the Ranji match for Bengal and played all nine matches of the SMAT, during which he engaged in additional bowling sessions to build his readiness for Test cricket, Saikia said.

Following a medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has opted to prioritise Shami’s knee recovery, ruling him out of selection for the final two Tests of the series. He will continue with a targeted rehabilitation programme under the guidance of BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence.

Shami’s potential participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be evaluated based on the progress of his knee recovery.
