Six people injured in explosion at Rheinmetall ammunition plant in Spain: Reports

Madrid, Jan 31 (UNI) Six people were injured in an explosion at a Rheinmetall ammunition factory in the Spanish province of Murcia, Spanish media reported, citing emergency services.

A tank exploded at the plant near the city of Murcia, the Cadena Ser radio reported on Thursday, adding that following the explosion, a fire started, which engulfed a forest area near the factory.

Emergency medical services provided assistance to six victims, five of whom were hospitalised, the report read. The condition of one of the injured is reportedly assessed as serious.

The enterprise in the village of Javali Viejo was founded in the 18th century as a gunpowder factory. Since 2010, the factory has been owned by Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, a subsidiary of German company Rheinmetall.

It produces all types of shells, fuses, cartridges and bombs. Rheinmetall Expal Munitions exports its products to the Turkish and Israeli armies and is also one of the suppliers of the Spanish armed forces.
