Motihari (Bihar), Oct 19 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said that social unity and equality will pave the way for development of a country.
Addressing the first convocation ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi Central University at Motihari in the state, the President highlighted the ideologies of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and said that every student should get equal opportunity and if needed the girls should be given more facilities in the field of education.
The University education is to prepare true and committed social servants, she said simplicity and truthfulness is a necessity for prosperity.
Murmu appealed to students to follow the path suggested by Mahatma Gandhi.
Referring to the glorious history and contributions of Champaran in freedom movement, the President said that at the call of Mahatma Gandhi everyone worked with unity shunning their caste and the forced the British Empire to bow down.
She also highlighted the diversity of Bihar in terms of geography and agriculture saying that the state has immense potential in the field of tourism and other sectors.
Murmu said the regional uniqueness and specifications can be capitalised for employment and self-employment of youths. She said the regional diversity will lead to the development of people.
The President appealed to the students to follow the principles and ideologies of truthfulness of Mahatma Gandhi in their life.
Murmu conferred degrees and medals to 1085 students and researchers at the convocation ceremony.
Besides Indian students, pupils from Nepal, Bangladesh and Burundi were also given degrees. She also conferred Chanakya fame actor and director Dr. Chandra Prakash Dwivedi with honorary doctorate at the function.
Former MP and industrialist RK Sinha was also felicitated with an honorary doctorate on the occasion.
Ten meritorious students and researchers were conferred with gold medals and degrees at the function.
On this occasion, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that the seven-year old university will soon get permanent building.
He said the state government will provide the necessary 300 acres of land and all the process of allotment will be completed within three days.
Nitish said if required government will also help in the construction of the building of the University.
Bihar Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar also addressed the convocation ceremony.
