Spain, Switzerland, Italy make strong starts in Euro 2024

Berlin, June 16 (UNI) Spain kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Croatia, scoring all three goals in the first half. Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Daniel Carvajal were the goal scorers for Spain in their Group B opener on Saturday.

Spain dominated the match from the start, with Ruiz’s pass setting up Morata for the first goal at the 30-minute mark. Ruiz himself scored just three minutes later with a low drive into the bottom corner. Carvajal then tapped in a cross from Lamine Yamal, who made history as the youngest player in the tournament at 16 years and 338 days old.

Croatia struggled to break through Spain’s defence, with Unai Simon making key saves to keep a clean sheet. Bruno Petkovic missed a late penalty and saw his rebound goal disallowed for encroachment, leaving Croatia scoreless.

In another Group B match, Italy overcame an early setback to defeat Albania 2-1. Nedim Bajrami’s opener for Albania was cancelled out by Alessandro Bastoni before Nicolo Barella scored the winning goal for Italy.

In Group A, Switzerland secured a 3-1 win over Hungary. Goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer gave Switzerland an early lead, and Breel Embolo sealed the victory with a late goal after Barnabas Varga had reduced the deficit for Hungary.
