Statement on farmers not personal opinion of Kangana: Congress

Chandigarh, Sep 25 (UNI) The Congress on Wednesday clamed that actor-turned-MP Kangana Ranaut’s statement that the three farm laws repealed by the Union Government in late 2021 should be brought back was not solely her personal opinion, but rather reflected the attitude of the BJP towards farmers.

The Narendra Modi government had formally repealed the law in December 2001 after prolonged protest by farmer groups.

Speaking to the media in Chandigarh, AICC National Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the BJP cannot dismiss the statement as Kangana’s personal opinion because she is not just a local-level party worker but an MP elected on a BJP ticket.

She claimed the BJP leadership had Kangana issue this statement as part of a calculated strategy. “In reality, this is the BJP’s stand, and Kangana is merely a facade,” she said.

According to her, Kangana’s statement has “exposed” the true face of the BJP, and it is evident that the party intends to re-implement the three black farm laws.

“Now, it is up to the people of Haryana to decide whether they want to bring back to power a party that imposed laws against which farmers struggled for long, endured police brutality, and where 750 farmers sacrificed their lives,” she said.

She said that if the BJP’s opinion indeed differs from that of Kangana, then PM Modi and party President JP Nadda should personally issue clarification.

Castigating the BJP government in Haryana for its treatment of farmers, Srinate showed some photographs and claimed that the police in Haryan carried out a lathicharge on farmers and the blockaded the Delhi-Haryana border with iron nails and concrete barriers.

She said the treatment meted out to those demanding their rights is unparalleled in its humiliation and oppression. “Farmers were labelled as terrorists, hooligans, goons, and Khalistanis,” she added.

Interacting with reporters in her constituency Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Kangana stoked a controversy by stressing on the need to bring back the three controversial farm laws.
