Suicide of Bengaluru techie sparks arrests

Bengaluru, Dec 14 (UNI) The tragic suicide of 34-year-old tech professional Atul Subhash has led to the arrest of his estranged wife and her family members in connection with allegations of harassment, extortion, and financial abuse.

Subhash, a resident of Manjunath Layout in Bengaluru, was found dead in his apartment on December 9, leaving behind a 25-page suicide note. In the note, he accused his wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family of subjecting him to relentless emotional and financial distress during their ongoing divorce proceedings.

Following a complaint filed by Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar, the Marathahalli police registered an FIR against Nikita, her mother Nisha Singhania, and her brother Anurag Singhania, on charges of abetment of suicide, harassment, and financial extortion. Another relative, Sushil Singhania, has yet to be arrested.

According to press statement, the arrests were made after Bengaluru police collaborated with their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Nikita was arrested in Gurgaon on Saturday morning, while Nisha and Anurag were apprehended in Allahabad. The arrested individuals were produced before a magistrate’s court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Atul’s suicide note revealed that he had been under extreme pressure due to the divorce, with demands from his wife’s family for financial settlements, including Rs 3 crore to settle disputes and Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to his four-year-old son. In addition to the note, Atul had also recorded several videos prior to his death, which have since gone viral on social media.

The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the emotional and legal challenges faced by individuals embroiled in protracted divorce proceedings. “Atul was pushed to his breaking point,” said Bikas Kumar, urging the authorities to ensure justice for his late brother. “The abuse described in his note is beyond what anyone should endure.”
