Pallekele, July 27 (UNI) India clinched a commanding 43-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the series, driven by standout performances from captain Suryakumar Yadav and Riyan Parag.
Suryakumar’s explosive 58 off 26 balls, featuring eight boundaries and two sixes, propelled India to a formidable total of 213 runs. Rishabh Pant added a crucial 49, while openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21) and Shubman Gill (34 off 16) provided a strong start with a brisk 74-run partnership before falling in quick succession.
Despite a late surge from Sri Lankan bowlers, led by Matheesha Pathirana’s four-wicket haul, including the scalps of Suryakumar and Pant, the hosts were left with an imposing target of 214.
Sri Lanka’s chase started well with Pathum Nissanka (79 off 48) and Kusal Mendis (45 off 27) forging a promising 55-run opening stand. However, the innings unravelled under pressure from India’s spinners.
Riyan Parag’s exceptional three-wicket haul, supported by Arshdeep Singh (2/24) and Mohammed Siraj (1/23), dismantled the Sri Lankan lineup, resulting in their dismissal for 170 runs in 19.2 overs.
India’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding underscored their comprehensive win, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series. The team now looks to build on this performance as they prepare for the second T20I, aiming to extend their winning streak.
