Toll in Kerala landslides rises to 238

Wayanad, (UNI) The death toll in landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad district rose to 238 on Wednesday, with 225 people still missing, officials said.

46 bodies were recovered from Chaliyar river, today, which was flown in between Pothukkal to Munderi areas in Malappuram district and around 38 Km away from the accident spot at Mundakkai., while 14 bodies recovered from the debris of the houses at Mundakkai.

The construction of Bailey bridge has begins in the morning temporarily suspended by the Army persons by 1500 hrs due to heavy downpour lashed at Wayanad, however, its construction has begun by joining nut and bolts by 1800 hours, despite the rains and heavy under currents in the river at Mundakkai areas. The completion of the construction works of bailey bridge will be finished by tomorrow, said Chief Secretary K Venu.

Three earth movers (JCB) also started the operations of removing muds and uprooted big trees from Mundakkai in the evening.

Rescue operators including Army personnel who rescued 1592 people victims from Mundakkai and Chooramala areas. ten bodies were recovered from Mundakkai under the debris of the houses. Search and rescue operations ended around 1730 hrs due to bad light and rainy weather conditions, sources said and it would continue on tomorrow morning, sources said.
