Gangneung (South Korea), Jan 27 (UNI) The United States and hosts South Korea won the dual moguls gold medals in freestyle skiing at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games here on Saturday.
U.S. freestyle skier Elizabeth Lemley claimed the women’s dual moguls title after having taken the mixed team dual moguls gold on Friday.
The 18-year-old had already posted several podium finishes such as the moguls gold and the dual moguls silver at the 2022 Junior World Championships.
Australia’s Lottie Lodge trailed Lemley to clinch silver, and the bronze went to Abby McLarnon of the United States.
South Korea’s Lee Yoon-seung claimed the men’s freestyle skiing dual moguls title after picking up the mixed team dual moguls silver in the previous day.
Porter Huff of the United States took the dual moguls silver, and Nakamura Takuto of Japan embraced bronze.
In the ice hockey 6-team events, the United States edged Slovakia at the men’s preliminary round through penalty shootout.
After both teams scored one goal each to tie the first two periods, the U.S. team regained the lead at 2-1, before the Slovakians scored three unanswered points to take a 4-2 lead.
However, the United States came back to level the score in the final period and win the shootout.
In the women’s 6-team preliminary matches, Sweden defeated Norway 5-1 while Switzerland beat France 2-0.
The curling competition continued with China overpowering Japan 7-5 in the mixed doubles round robin.
The figure skating competition began with the pairs and the men’s short programs.
Jacob Sanchez of the United States led the men’s singles with 76.38 points in the short program, edging out Adam Hagara of Slovakia who scored 75.06 points.
South Korea’s Kim Hyung-yeom trailed in third with 69.28 points, while Junior Grand Prix Final champion Rio Nakata of Japan finished in 13th with 55.59 points.
1,802 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 78 nations and regions are competing in four cities of Gangneung, PyeongChang, Jeongseon and Hoengseong until February 1.
The Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics features seven sports, 15 disciplines and 81 events.
