US Open 2024: Balaji and Andreozzi win nail-biter to reach doubles round

New York, Aug 29 (UNI) N Sriram Balaji and Guido Andreozzi triumphed in a thrilling three-set encounter at the US Open 2024, edging past New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell and Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela to reach the men’s doubles round of 32 on Wednesday.

The Indo-Argentine pair fought back after losing the first set 5-7, dominating the second set 6-1, and eventually clinching the final set in a dramatic tie-breaker, 12-10, after two hours and 36 minutes of intense play.

Meanwhile, India’s Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti secured a more straightforward victory, winning their opening match in straight sets. The duo defeated the American wildcard team of Patrik Trhac and Ryan Seggerman 6-3, 6-4, wrapping up the match in 77 minutes.

Bhambri and Olivetti dominated from the start, earning early breaks in both sets to cruise into the next round.

Veteran Indian player Rohan Bopanna is also poised for action, partnering with Australian Matthew Ebden as the second-seeded pair. They will face the Dutch duo Robin Haase and Sander Arends in their opening match on Thursday. Additionally, Bopanna will compete in the mixed doubles alongside Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi.

Sumit Nagal, who was scheduled to compete in the men’s doubles, will miss the tournament after his partner, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, withdrew due to medical reasons.
