US to send more combat aircraft to Middle East in response to ‘Iranian threats’

Washington, Aug 2 (UNI) The United States will dispatch additional combat aircraft to the Middle East to counter “threats from Iran” and Iranian-allied groups in the region, the local media reported on Friday, citing US officials.

The US seeks to address what it sees as threats from Iran and pro-Iranian groups in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen who have expressed the intent to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel to avenge the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, the report said.

US forces in the region are taking “necessary measures” to increase their combat readiness and protect American troops and allies alike against Iran or Iran-backed groups, the report said, citing a military official.

On Wednesday, Hamas confirmed that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran after he took part in the inauguration of newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The movement blamed Israel and the United States for Haniyeh’s death and said the attack would not go unanswered.
