Dehradun, Mar 13 (UNI) The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Bill became a Law on Wednesday as President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval to the legislation passed in the state Assembly on February 7.
With the President’s assent, Uttarakhand has became the first state since independence to have a Uniform Civil Code.
A notification in this regard was issued by Uttarakhand Governor Major General (Retd) Gurmeet Singh on behalf of President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday.
In a tweet, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his happiness on the issuance of the notification.
“It is a moment of great joy and pride for all the people of the state that President Droupadi Murmu ji has given her assent to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill passed by the BJP government in the Uttarakhand Assembly,” said Dhami.
He further said, “Certainly, with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code Act in the state, all citizens will get equal rights and the harassment on women will also be curbed. Proving the significance of social equality in the state, the Uniform Civil Code will play an important role in promoting harmony. “
