Weather improves after snow, rain lashes Kashmir valley

Srinagar, Feb 21 (UNI) Weather conditions in Kashmir improved on Friday after higher reaches received light to moderate snowfall, while the plains were lashed by heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, officials said.

According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the weather is expected to remain dry with partly cloudy skies until February 23.

However, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall at scattered places across Jammu and Kashmir on February 24 and 25.

It said that another Western Disturbance is likely to hit and trigger light to moderate rain and snowfall at many places during February 26 to 28 over Jammu and Kashmir.

Giving details of the precipitation, the MeT office said that the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 13.0 cm of snowfall, the picnic spot of Kokernag 2.0cm and the ski resort of Gulmarg 7.0cm during the past 24 hours.

Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley received light to moderate torrential rains. The highest precipitation was recorded at Kokernag (27.2 mm), followed by Qazigund and Pahalgam 14.2mm, 6mm and Srinagar 11.4mm during the past 24 hours, respectively.

Jammu witnessed moderate to heavy precipitation, with Banihal receiving 15.0cm of snowfall and 38.9mm of rain followed by Jammu 27.4mm, Batote 48.1mm, Baderwah 41.0mm,Katra 27.7mm and Kathua 34.2mm during the past 24 hours.

In the Union Territory of Ladakh, 2 to 3 inches of snowfall was recorded at Zojila pass, Drass, Sankoo and Zanaskar areas, officials said.

The night temperature dipped again following the inclement weather, and barring Pahalgam and Kokernag, it was recorded above normal in other weather stations during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Srinagar recorded a minimum of 1.6°C, and it was 0.1°C above the average during this period of season. The maximum temperature at Srinagar also witnessed a dip and was recorded at 10.7°C on Thursday, and it was 0.3°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu Kashmir.

The minimum temperature at Pahalgam in south Kashmir was recorded at -2.4°C, Kokernag -2.0°C. The ski resort of Gulmarg remained the coldest place with -5.6°C.

However, it was 0.4°C above the average for the valley of meadows in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district during the period, the MeT office said.
