WHO launches global plan to fight dengue

Geneva, Oct 4 (UNI) The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a Global Strategic Preparedness, Readiness and Response Plan (SPRP) to tackle dengue and other Aedes-borne arboviruses, a statement said on Friday.

An estimated four billion people are at risk of infection from arboviruses around the world, and this number is estimated to increase to 5 billion by 2050. Dengue is now endemic in more than 130 countries, WHO said.

The SPRP comprises five key components essential for a successful outbreak response: Emergency coordination, collaborative surveillance, epidemiological analysis, laboratory diagnostics and field investigations;

The Plan will be implemented over one year until September 2025, and require USD 55 million to support health preparedness, readiness and response efforts.
